The GoalSimply put, the goal of the LonelyBot project is to build a semiautonomous, satellite-linked, solar powered boat, and sail it from the San Francisco bay area to Hawaii and back, all from the comfort of my cubicle. And all without maintenance, human contact, or a drop of fossil fuel. First stop Hawaii, next stop... around the world? The "why" is a bit trickier, but, in short:
Its true that one way to interpret this is that I'm just a grumpy cube-worker with wanderlust, and I won't deny that. But I submit to you that there is no reason, in this day of instantaneous communication anywhere in the world, for us to live only where we presently are. I want LonelyBot to be an extension of me, my link to one of the infinite places that are not where I presently am. My personal belief is that some things are worth doing even if they won't cure cancer, promote world peace, or end hunger, and yet I think its hard to deny that something like LonelyBot really does make the world just a little bit smaller. Plus, what else am I going to do at night, work out? HA.
